I hadn’t been to NYC since I was 9.
I had no clue of what I was in for, what to see, etc.
If you are planning a trip to New York City (especially with your family) and are in the same boat, then I highly suggest you take a bus tour of the city to learn about the city, and get a frame of reference for what you’d like to see!
My family and I did the Downtown Tour from Skyline Sightseeing. These are the big orange double decker buses you see carting tourists all over town. I purchased discounted tickets for the tour through ScoreBig. It was the perfect way to get an overview of Manhattan!
The buses have two levels and it is a MUST for you to ride on the open-air top level! The weather was perfect and you get an amazing view of everything on the tour (your pictures will be amazing!).
The downtown tour departs from 42nd Street and 8th Avenue. Tickets can be purchased in a souvenir shop right next to a BBQ restaurant a few doors down from where the bus is parked. All of the advertisers holding Skyline Sightseeing signs on the street were all extremely friendly and helpful.
For the Skyline tours, you get your own earbuds and listen to a recording that narrates the entire 2.5-3 hour tour. I appreciated not having to listen to a live tour guide that some other tour buses had. Maybe it was my mood for the day. You could also select the language you wanted to listen to the narration in. Now that’s accommodating!
The tour was the perfect way to preview all of downtown Manhattan. It is a hop-on-hop-off tour, so it is also an economical way to visit a variety of attractions in NYC without having to pay for additional cabs or the subway. Notable stops on the route included Times Square, Empire State Building, Chinatown/Canal Street, the World Trade Center Memorial, the Statue of Liberty, Rockefeller Center, and Central Park. The narration was perfect for learning about the history of New York City. You’ll get an overview of the character of each borough and learn factoids and trivia that will make you appreciate Manhattan even more!
Have you taken a NYC bus tour before? What did you think about it?
